Easy Family Halloween Countdown Activity Ideas

I love fall. All of it - the pumpkins, the hot chocolate, the sweater weather.

My daughter is now old enough, at 3, to understand Halloween and be very excited for its arrival later this month. I wanted to find a way to have fun together as a family as we countdown to the day of Halloween while keeping things simple (we are, like everyone else I know, busy).

So we decided to do a simple countdown - putting a daily Halloween-related activity on a piece of paper inside an envelope. For each day that we countdown, we will open the envelope and do that activity.

Now, if you Google "Halloween activities for kids", you are going to feel overwhelmed. Some lovely parents out there have hundreds of intense ideas for crafts and activities that require lots of materials and time. I am not at that stage of life. You might be, and if so, that's awesome. But around this house, we need easy.

So I put together our 10-day countdown and thought I would share it with all of you. I added additional ideas that I thought of that we might use in future years but are not doing this year, so you will find 12 days of ideas here. You will notice that 4 of the days are simply reading a Halloween book, because, again - we need easy. At the same time, I think the fun of opening the envelope to find out the day's activity will be a neat way to make a special tradition without creating a lot of additional work.

There are a few more time-intensive activities included (like going to a pumpkin patch) that we already had planned on our calendars. One night during the lead up to Halloween, I'll be out of town for a work trip, so we made sure to choose something easy (watch a Halloween TV show) on that night while my husband is solo parenting. And, of course, on October 31st, the activity is trick-or-treating.

You can find an editable version of the pages I printed for our envelopes at the link below - feel free to print any that you would like to use or modify them in any way for your own family. To simplify even further, choose to do just a 3- or 5-day countdown instead of longer.
